RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the site... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," he commented. "They were part of numerous British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it called a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
